A Tour of the Old Town, Snorkling, and Tortoises!

Our hotel and beach were so wonderful and relaxing.  The tide was very obvious, ranging from right at our doorstep to hundreds of meters out.  Such a wonderful get-away!!!!

Oddly enough, guess what we spotted at the place next door:  Yup, a Washington license plate!!!!

However, a stay in Zanzibar would not be complete without a tour of the old city center  Stone Town was at the center of both the spice trade and the slave trade.  So off we went, to be treated to a glimpse of Zanzibar's past.

First stop, the old fort ~

Us!

See those pink bananas? They are called mazunga bananas.  Mazunga means 'someone who wanders around', but is used to refer to white people.  Why are the bananas called that, you ask?  Well, because we burn in the sun!!!!!

Anyone need to make a long distance call?  It's free - if you can shimmy up that pole snd hold on!!!!

Finally we visited the most famous landmark in Stone Town, a former sultan's residence, now called the House of Wonders ~

Here is the view from the top of the House of Wonders -

The inside was filled with furniture and art from days gone by.

This is a photograph of  Salamah bint Said, Princess of Zanzibar.  She grew up and married a German trader, and then became an author, under the name Emily Ruete.

A view down to the crypts

Next we were off for some snorkling, and then a stop at Prison Island!

The weather was perfect, and the snorkeling was better than I expected.  I wish I had an underwater camera to show all the corals and fish we saw!  It was loads of fun, and best of all ~ no sharks!!!!!  ;)

Prison Island was named such because it was intended to house a prison, but because of an epidemic outbreak it instead became a port for quarantine.  Today it is home to a tortoise sanctuary!

This fellow was making quite the ruckus!  Not sure he really knew what he was doing....

Someone found a friend  ~  This old tortoise tolerated being pet by me, but actually looked at David and stretched his neck out for more!   I guess he knew I wasn't really a reptilian sort of gal!

Here's another gorgeous tree!   I just couldn't get over them, all over Tanzania!!!!

And me with Ilham, Eddie's little girl ~  We all had a great day!
