Safari Day 3 - Ngorongoro Crater

After a yummy dinner prepared especially for us, a fit of giggles, and a chilly night (this is winter, we were reminded!!!!), we embarked on another day of safari. This time we were going to descend into Ngorongoro Crater.

One of our first sights?  Something that I remember seeing on Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom: a bevy of pink flamingos!

We also saw many Crested Cranes - the bird found on the flag of Uganda:

This one reminds me of a road runner but it's really a Kori buzzard!

I couldn't imagine today offering anything since yesterday we saw all we could have hoped for and then some!  But I have to say - seeing these animals in their natural habitat just does not get old!!!!!!

Lions ahead ~

Really just big kitty cats!

Lolling in the sun!

A chilly ride, but awesome!!!

More zebras.  Today we really noticed the migration of the zebras and wildebeest.  Quite something to witness!

I had to include one of our many "Butts of Tanzania" shots!!!  hehehe

A beautiful view of the crater. Loads of Crested Cranes to admire. What a vista we had!

And as if just for our viewing pleasure, the wildebeest were sparring with one another.

Not to be outdone, the cranes put on a show as well!!!

As we drove around the crater, we saw all kinds of animals.  There were also almost different sorts of habitats - dry plains, water holes, forested areas....  We were keeping our eyes open for the black rhino, but knew we probably wouldn't see one as there are only about 19 left between the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.  Very sad ~

We saw lots of other animals while searching, though!

Similarities between lions and house cats - Similarities between jackals and dogs!

The drive sure was cold!!!!!  Good thing I had the right clothes to keep myself warm as we looked for new animals!!

And good thing I kept my eyes open - PUMBA!!!  These warthogs are hysterical looking!!!!!

And just as it got quiet - we came upon this bull.  So huge!!

As we were eyeing the big bull elephant, this little pumba was sneaking up on us - acting all casual!!!  ;)

As we climbed back out of the crater, we spotted these cuties!

By the time we got back to our campsite, we were tired and hungry.  And so was someone else!  This Marabou Stork was walking through out site looking for scraps!!!

Yup, just wandering through our campsite ~

We had to get up early the next day to head home -
Good-bye Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti!!!!

But our animal viewing wasn't over. These baboons were along side the road as we headed back home ~
